[Parlimen Sungai Siput] Why I am a socialist and intend to remain so - Jeyaku...
"Hey Kumar! Still tilting at windmills are you?" a doctor friend greeted me at an MMA function 4 years ago. There had been some news regarding the Parti Sosialis Malaysia in the media that previous week.
For many, the socialist experiment had already been assigned to the dustbin of history and only deluded people would still work towards socialism
But for us in the PSM, we believe that socialism has an important, even crucial, role to play in averting a collosal economic-ecological disaster that will occur within the next 30-60 years!
We believe that the world has to find a workable alternative to an economy driven by corporate greed. We advise 3 main arguments for this position.
1. Malaysia's current economic course recommends to a "Race of the bottom"
The global owners of capital and technological expertise who control market access are a relatively small number of corporations – about 500 to 1000. They have become all powerful in the unipolar world of today and they can "bargain hunt". Even the biggest governments can't control them.
The measures that Malaysia is taking to attract investors into Malaysia include
Lowering corporate tax and supplementing tax income by enacting a GST. The tax burden is being shifted onto ordinary Malaysians
Enhancing "labour flexibility". This is a misnomer - it undermines job security and workers' rights through allowing contractualizing of labour and by weakening unions.
Privatization of basic services such as health care and tertiary education.
All these measures pile economic pressure on the lower 70 % of the population.
And these are measures other developing countries are also taking – each outdoing the neighbor in the mad rush for FDI. It is very difficult to build a caring society within this framework of development.
2. Chronic under consumption leading to massive growth of financial capital and increasingly volatile financial "bubbles"
The ability of large corporations to "bargain hunt" in the cheapest sites to station their factories has meant mega-profits for these corporions but at the same time has stunted the aggregate consumption power of the global economy. When a US or European firm lays off 100 US workers by shifting to China and hiring 100 Chinese workers at 1/7 the wage, the total buying power of the working class is reduced.
The absence of robust growth in consumer demand dictates that the profits of the corporations cannot be invested in the production of more consumer goods. So the corporations need to try other alternatives to make money such as the Futures Market, Currency Trading, the Share Market, and other financial products like derivatives.
This tendency is highlighted by the fact that "Quantitative Easing" – the release of more money into the US economy in an effort to stimulate industrial production thus reducing unemployment – has backfired into the creation of more financial bubbles in various parts of the world. The problem is sluggish consumer demand, not a lack of productive capital.
The issue here is not insufficient regulations but a misdistribution of the world's wealth! To address this problem, the power of the corporations has to be challenged!
3. We are reaching the environment limits of growth.
The global economy is heavily dependent on petroleum. This commodity is going to run out within the next 50 years or so. We urgently need to think not only of alternatives sources of fuel, but also of much greater fuel efficiency!
Global warming is with us. How soon and how fast sea levels are going to rise is still a matter of conjecture – but does that mean we can afford to ignore the issue if it only impacts our grandchildren and not us?
An economic model that requires a global average rate of growth of 4% per year to avoid downturns is clearly not sustainable! Not for the next 50 years! We need to redistribute the wealth we already are creating more equitably. We have to cut down waste! Growth cannot be endless.
All of these are only possible if we are ready to challenge the paradigm that unchecked greed will lead to the best possible outcome for the world's majority because Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand" is still operating in today's corporate led globalization.
The ordinary people of the world need to take power to dictate the direction of the national or world economy away from the hands of the 560 richest corporations of the world.
We need to empower the marhein of the world to take on these tasks through a democratic process. These are the tasks facing 21st century socialism. These are not easily attainable goals.
But the problems we are facing are extremely serious. Unchecked they could lead to an ecological, food or climatic disaster that will lead to a decimation of the world's population.
This is not the world that I wish to bequeath my grandchildren. That is why I am a socialist and intend to remain so despite the EO/ISA arrest!

[Parlimen Sungai Siput] 15-minute family reunion for EO 6
K Pragalath The six detained PSM members met their families for 15 minutes this morning and told tales of mental torture, solitary confinement and endless interrogation by the police
July 15, 2011
KUALA LUMPUR: Interrogated for hours on end, lights kept on all night, filthy toilets and solitary confinement were some of the ordeals the six arrested under the Emergency Ordinance were subjected to.
The Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members are still being held in custody and the authorties, to deflect more criticism against them, allowed the families to visit the six – but for only 15 minutes.Sungai Siput MP Dr D Michael Jeyakumar's son, M Ravin, said his father complained about the facilities when he met him this morning in Bukit Aman."He complained of lights kept on at night and dirty toilets," said the 18-year-old student at a press conference organised in Bangsar by PSM.
Jeyakumar's wife, R Mohana Rani added that her husband scolded the police once."He got fed up and scolded them for asking the same questions over and over again," she said
The "EO 6" as they are now known also includes PSM deputy president M Saraswathy, central committee members Choo Chon Kai and M Sugumaran, youth chief R Sarathbabu and Sungai Siput branch secretary A Letchumanan.
The other five PSM activists also had family visits at different places.Choo is in Selayang, Saraswathi in Jinjang, Letchumanan in Petaling, Sugumaran in Dang Wangi and Sarath Babu in the Jalan Travers police stations
Five inked affidavits
Saraswathy's niece, Sasi Indra Devi, said her aunt complained about chest pains and asked why they were still detained instead of being charged in court.
Choo's girlfriend Wong Pei Chin, 23, said the former was generally satisfied with his conditions.
"He has everything but freedom," said Pei Chin whose hometown is Simpang Renggam where the EO detention centre is located.
Sugumaran's brother K Indran said: "He was in tears when we met. He complained of solitary confinement. The interrogation lasted four to five hours each time."
PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan who also met Sugumaran told FMT that the police had allegedly threatened to torture Sugumaran's son.
He also added that the lawyers are making representation to the Attorney-General's Chambers for a release on the grounds of Sugumaran's ill mother.
As for Letchumanan, his son L Devendran 19 said his father was in good condition.
"We miss him. He told us to take care of his business," said Devendran about Letchumanan who is an insurance agent.Sarath Babu's mother, K Vijayaletchmy, said her son complained of repeated questioning.
"He is having a headache as he can't understand the repeated questioning. He believes that he would be released by the end of the month," she said. Lawyer D Yudistira confirmed that five out of the six have signed affidavits.
"We are disappointed that we couldn't get Letchumanan's signature. But we would make an attempt to meet Letchumanan's son," said the lawyer

[Parlimen Sungai Siput] Justice for Jeyakumar — Martin Jalleh
http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/sideviews/article/justice-for-jeyakumar-martin-jalleh/
JULY 13 — Bersih 2.0 laid bare the fact that Umno is politically bankrupt. It brought out the same old bag of tricks, treats and threats. It looked like a party in a sordid state of denial and beyond redemption.
Alas, the BN went berserk over Bersih! The coalition continues to be the bane of democracy in Bolehland as it resorts to political moves most base in stifling and stopping Bersih!
The Prime Minister now tries desperately hard to redeem his battered image — which he has largely brought upon himself! Time and again he blundered — and very badly too.
The Home Minister did what he is most at home with — he bellowed with rage, and blared out the most bizarre and unimaginable balderdash. But no one bothers anymore with his bark and blather!
Of course the men in blue who looked as though they made up a branch of the Government (or a component of the BN), bowed, bent and did the bidding of their political (pay)master.
The Bersih 2.0 march is over but its spirit lives on in many Malaysians – in spite of it being branded "illegal". The Government can ban all it wants, but the rakyat will not be browbeaten!
The BN's image has hit rock-bottom. It should begin cleansing its stained credibility and integrity by releasing all who are still "illegally" detained (as a result of their involvement with Bersih)!
Till to date, there is no solid and substantiated basis for the continued detention in particular of Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj and five of his colleagues of the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM).
The Government has reduced itself to a political buffoon by resurrecting the"communist" and "foreign" bogeyman in the arrest and re-arrest of Dr Jeyakumar and the rest.
For a Government that brags so much about transformation and change, deploying Cold War tactics on political rivals in these days only reveals how far behind the times it really is!
Expecting the public to believe that Jeyakumar is trying to revive communist ideology is as ridiculous as saying that Deputy PM Muhyiddin Yassin is intelligent!
Those who know Jeyakumar personally readily vouch for his integrity, his passion for the poor and his principled, patient and peaceful approach. The MP is truly a rare breed politician!
The judiciary has just betrayed its often loud claim of being independent when it delayed today the hearing date of habeas corpus application of Jeyakumar and the five others by a month.
A June 2010 court circular states that such urgent hearing dates must be fixed within a week after filing. The blunt and brutal truth — the judiciary remains beholden to the government.
The longer Jeyakumar and his colleagues remain behind bars, the longer the Government of Malaysia will look bad in the eyes of the world. It has no one to blame but itself.
The Government has to clean up its act. Malaysia sits on the UN Human Rights Council with a laundry list of transgressions. It cannot afford to turn a blind eye to this daylight mockery!
Alas, the Government got more than it bargained for when trying to banish Bersih into oblivion. Najib leads the nation forward into abysmal political backwaters.

Najib puts on a brave front whilst playing his blame game. He has been blindly led by his advisors and now finds himself in a bind, with a bruised ego and sounding very much like a broken record!
This time a humble woman lawyer of substance and a non-politician outshone him. Each time he attacked her, he reduced himself to a small boy begging for attention and looking for a fight.
The Home Minister did what he is most at home with — he bellowed with rage, and blared out the most bizarre and unimaginable balderdash. But no one bothers anymore with his bark and blather!

A bunch of bullies, their brutality was captured on bountiful clips on the Internet. Yet they unashamedly bulled about their innocence, and the PM and Home Minister added to the bunkum!
Whilst Malaysians refused to buckle, the bosses of the servile mainstream press continued to suck up to their political masters, giving stories a spin and slant that served the government The beleaguered BN continued to bluff itself– all the time! The rakyat refused to buy what it (and its newspapers) were selling! The Bersih 2.0 march is over but its spirit lives on in many Malaysians – in spite of it being branded "illegal".
Hidup rakyat.
